Choosing and using software

USCIS form autofill for law firms: how I-130, I-485, I-864 and N-400 prefill works, and what it can't do

Every immigration paralegal has typed the same client's name, A-number and date of birth into four forms and then found a typo on the fifth. Autofill from a single intake fixes that, but only if the mapping between intake and the PDF's fields is right, and only if the software knows where to stop. This is how Juke Immigration does it, including the parts we leave blank on purpose.

One intake, many forms

The client's answers live in one structured record: petitioner, beneficiary, household, relationship, address and employment history, the moral-character questions. Each USCIS form has a mapping file that says which intake field lands in which PDF field. Change an answer once and every form that uses it changes. That is the whole idea, and it is also why the data model never renames a field: a dozen mappings depend on each key.

How the mapping is verified

USCIS PDFs are not friendly. Hundreds of fields carry names like "undefined_14", radio buttons have export values that must be extracted from the PDF's own structure, and a field that looks like a name box may be a date box by its position and width. Each form's mapping is built by extracting field positions, rendering the pages, and confirming field by field what each box is before a single client's data goes through it. Coverage is reported honestly: I-864 with the joint-sponsor second form, N-400 and I-129F are complete; I-130, I-485 and I-751 are mapped and awaiting a final positional audit; I-765 and I-131 are partial. We would rather tell you that than imply every form is done.

What stays blank, and why

Signature blocks, interpreter and preparer sections, and agency-use boxes are never filled. USCIS's signature rules allow a copy of a hand-signed form but reject pasted signature images, so the correct workflow is to print the signature pages, sign by hand, and scan them back; Juke's signing flow verifies the scanned page before it is merged into the final packet. A product that drops a signature image into the PDF is manufacturing a rejection.

The I-864 joint sponsor case

The affidavit of support is where autofill earns its keep. When a household has a joint sponsor, the form has to be produced twice, once for the petitioner and once for the joint sponsor, with the sponsor-basis question answered differently on each, and the military-service question asked only of the petitioner. Juke generates both PDFs from the same intake with those rules built in, which is exactly the kind of detail that gets missed at the end of a long day.

Autofill is the start of review, not the end

A prefilled form is a draft. The paralegal reviews it against the intake and the evidence, the attorney reviews it for the decisions only a lawyer makes, and the client reviews it before signing. Autofill removes the transcription errors; it does not remove the judgment. Juke's review checklist walks each form field group in order so nothing is skimmed.

Built for the firm that does this work

Juke Immigration gives solo and small immigration firms a free, unlimited client pre-screen, structured intake, document audits, USCIS form prefill and a branded client portal. Pay $49 per accepted case on a $149/month platform; founding firms skip the $997 setup fee.

Questions to ask any vendor

Which forms, exactly, and how was each mapping verified? What happens to signature blocks? How is a joint sponsor handled? When USCIS publishes a new edition, how quickly is the mapping re-verified, and do you tell me? Ask for a demonstration with a real closed file, and compare the output to the packet you actually filed.

Questions firms ask

Which USCIS forms does Juke Immigration prefill?

I-864 (including the joint-sponsor form), N-400 and I-129F are complete; I-130, I-485 and I-751 are mapped pending a final audit; I-765 and I-131 are partial. Coverage is reported per form rather than as a blanket claim.

Does autofill sign the forms?

No. Signature, interpreter, preparer and agency-use fields are left blank. USCIS rejects pasted signature images; the correct flow is a hand-signed page scanned back, which Juke verifies before merging.

How are field mappings checked?

By extracting the PDF's field positions and radio export values, rendering the pages, and confirming each field visually and positionally before use. Unusual field names like 'undefined_14' are never guessed.

Does prefill replace paralegal review?

No. It removes transcription errors. The paralegal, the attorney and the client each review before signing.
